The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which was approved by the European Parliament in April 2016 was enforced on the 25th of May 2018 to the European Union had adverse effects on countries worldwide. The necessity of the GDPR emerged due to the multitude of data being transferred via online mediums. The EU GDPR portal states that the GDPR was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy (EU GDPR Portal: Site Overview).

The Car rental industry has long been identified as a lucrative market in the entire world, they attract many customers and these customers’ personal data are requested by these companies to complete their transaction. It is a procedure common to all car rental companies across the world.

The term personal data includes details such as Name, License Number, Phone Number, Email ID, Credit Card Information, locations traveled, social media content, personal residence, etc. These data are quite sensitive and deserve to be protected for the client’s privilege of privacy.

With the implementation of the GDPR, the clients or the citizens within the EU are given the privilege of the protection of their privacy. While GDPR remains a hot topic, car rental companies, fleet owners, lease companies, etc. have shown certain reluctance towards compliance.

These industries have been working with clients for decades handling the same data, without realizing the magnitude of the significance of it. Therefore, with the introduction of a system that threatens to take 4% of their annual global turnover (Manning, 2017) can be met with vehemence.

However, GDPR should be looked at as more of an opportunity than a threat. Through GDPR compliance the company inadvertently creates a bond with the customer, a pact if you will. The customer is aware that the data provided will be safe, therefore he/she would not object to provide more data.

It must be noted that in an era where data is of paramount importance, this is a blessing in disguise. It provides the perfect opportunity to develop your service with data provided by your customers. The car rental industry is driven by the needs of the customer, therefore customizing the service provided with the help of the new data the company can acquire it can guarantee it’s client better service, which will no doubt increase client satisfaction which will in turn make the business more profitable.

The trust that is part and parcel of the GDPR compliance will no doubt aid car rental companies to understand its clients and thereby cater to them better. Therefore, we believe that car rental companies should comply with GDPR. In order to support car rental companies to get compliance on GDPR, Navotar Car Rental Software updates it’s software to comply with GDPR.

Furthermore, Navotar is introducing a customer portal where the renters will be able to login and check all their personal information and update their profiles by themselves without waiting on rental company.
